I Saw Some Powerful Moments in the First Women Who Cowork Retreat

As Soma Vida began to slowly populate with some of the coworking community’s top female pioneers I couldn’t help but hear Leslie Knope in the back of my head saying, “I am a goddess, a glorious female warrior. Queen of all that I survey. Enemies of fairness and equality, hear my womanly roar.” By the end of the two-day retreat, I couldn’t have described these women better – glorious female warriors.

The retreat began with a meet & greet at Prohibition Creamery - an alcohol infused ice-cream parlor that gave us a chance to relax and connect over two of life’s sweetest things, sugar and booze. We welcomed the 22 women from the United States, Scotland and Canada to Soma Vida, a wellness coworking space, with yoga, goodie bags and plenty of coffee to kick our minds into gear. After a refreshing morning of yoga, acai bowls and delicious bagels lovingly handmade and donated by Oren Salomon, we started to get down to lady-business with our carefully curated Speaker Salon. Designed around coworking culture, female empowerment, wellness and business strategy, the Salon featured from some of the women who have helped define what it truly means to cowork: Liz Elam of Link Coworking and GCUC Global, Ashley Proctor of 312 Main, Creative Blueprint, Foundrey, COHIP and GCUC Canada and Felena Hanson of HeraHub, HeraLabs and HeraAngles. Shortly after a rejuvenating lunch we broke out in into groups for a group collaboratory, "a la unconference" sessions – discussions on the business of coworking topics, work life balance, mental health and womanhood and generally being female in a world designed by and for men. Returning, the second day, everyone was eager to gather once more for a morning with the amazing, Cat Johnson, who schooled us in the art of writing "resilient and inspiring" content and sharing our coworking stories with our community members and with the world.

It was a weekend dedicated to the wellness, support and connection of the women who are redefining what it means to be a 21st century female in business. The collaboration of ideas helped the entrepreneurs redefine their business modeling and financials, understand importance of partnerships and of course, create a foundation for new positive mental health habits. The wonderful relationships I witnessed develop amongst this powerful tribe of glorious female warriors is one that will stay with me forever and keep each of us motivated to keep working for equality, self-love and success.
